Less over-run with tourists than the Aran Islands, I spent a week on the Island of the White Cow, walking its length and breadth and chasing what birds I could find.  The harbour area features the ruins of a fort constructed at the time of Cromwell’s conquest of Ireland.  What a sad and terrible time that must have been for the local inhabitants.

I stayed at the local hostel, which made the extended visit to the island affordable. It was nearly empty at this time of year.

Tom Hickey - Farmer & PoetTom Hickey

These pages are dedicated to Tom Hickey, who was perhaps the last bachelor-farmer-poet of the Hickey clan. This picture was taken during one of our visits to Tom's favourite woods at Curraghchase. Mount Knockfierna is the backround. This is the high ground that overlooks the family fields and where the fairy folk are said to dwell.
