I Met Your Father at the Jail
Maggie was a little shocked and embarassed when we expalined to her that her parents met at the King County Jail in Seattle, Washington. Maggie's Mom and Dad had joined tens of thousands of trade unionists, environmentalists and other ordinary folk in Seattle in late 1999 to protest the WTO. Rob missed most of the festivities since he had to join some 600 other protestors for a compulsory meeting in the jail. His crime was wearing his union jacket while walking on the sidewalk outside the union hall. What violence we saw at these protests was committed by untrained and understaffed security officers against peaceful protestors.
Rob spent three days in jail while hundreds of his brothers and sisters held a vigil in front of the jailhouse. Erin was working for 1199 Norhtwest, the hospital workers union at the time. While Rob lounged around in jail eating boloney sandwiches on the State's tab, Erin continued the struggle outside. Rob and Erin met on the jail steps after he was released. What better way is there to start a lifelong relationship?
We continue to organize for social justice at home and around the globe. Having Maggie join our lives has reinforced our commitment to act for peace and justice in small and large ways. Our pages on politics will share our thoughts and experiences in the struggle for social and economic justice.
Fall's Double Whammy
The fall brought us two very difficult new developments. First, our country re-elected some one who is the antithesis of social and economic justice. Four more years will mean thousands more dead in Iraq, millions more in poverty and without health insurance, and a world pillaged by corporate profiteers. We may have mourned for a day or two after the election, but we are now back to organizing and fighting to build a better world for Maggie and her generation.

Working Families Party New York, like a handful of other states has fusion voting, meaning a candidate can be listed on several party lines. While we don't believe this is the answer to our problems with the political system, they are a good group trying to build political power for working class families. |
Maggie's Blog Occassionally Maggie is compelled to comment on political issues. Recently, Maggie read that Bush supporters were spending $15,000 to rent fur coats for the inaugural ball while hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizens lost health care coverage. |
Politics and Angelman Maggie has opened our eyes to a previously unknown world of advocacy. She has also made very real the importance of fighting policies that promote wars and defund social services. . |
Hickey v. City of SeattleRob was the lead plantiff in the successful class action case against the City of Seattle by the 150 or so arrestees at "Fisrt and Broad". We settled before it went to trial and our cut paid for a week or two of Maggie's daycare.. |
Politics of Breastfeeding Erin has quickly become an expert on the many challenges and issues around breastfeeding. Last year, she wrote a great paper on why nursing should be a union issue in the States. (It already is in most countries.).This year she is doing a research project on the economic history of wet nurses. |
